DOUBLES TOURNAMENT

Who is free to bowl Sunday? There's a doubles tournament at Clayton Valley Bowl.

  1. Sharon, Olivia, and I entered in this one. The Coach was in Reno for the weekend.

The crossover aspect made it an interesting and fun tournament. Each of us bowled three games but those three games counted for our singles and for all three doubles combinations.

Here's the way it worked. The entry fee was $50.00 per doubles team ($25.00 apiece) and $10.00 for singles. I paid $25.00 to bowl doubles with Sharon and $10.00 for my own singles entry. I also had a doubles entry with Olivia but I didn't have to bowl a separate series with her because of the crossover feature. The second doubles entry would be another $25.00 except we only have to pay the lineage once. It was only $17.00 for the second doubles entry with Olivia. I paid $52.00 total and the three games I bowled were applied to three different events -- doubles with Sharon, doubles with Olivia, and my own singles entry. Sharon and Olivia did the same thing.

Each of us bowled three games on lanes 19-20 with our scores applied to the following events:

    Sharon & Mark - doubles
    Sharon & Olivia - doubles
    Olivia & Mark - doubles
    Sharon - singles
    Olivia - singles
    Mark - singles

Without the crossover feature, we would have been required to bowl three separate three-game series to complete those events. We would have been there all days instead of for just a few hours.

We bowled with the second group of the day at 2:00 and for some odd reason, they didn't resurface the lanes between groups. The dry conditions under which we bowled were a substantial disadvantage for Sharon's style of play. Sharon's hook with its long arc can grow a bit unwieldy under dry conditions. Olivia and I have styles that are more compatible with medium-to-dry lanes. We probably would have been better off if we bowled the noon session on fresh oil. (It must have been exceptionally difficult for the next group that came in at 4:00.)

Olivia easily had the best day of our trio. After bowling her first 200 game at practice on Wednesday, she nailed her first 500 series in the tournament. IIRC, she had scores of 125-194-188 for a scratch series of 507. Her book average was 131 so that was substantially higher than her average series score of 393. With the handicap being 80% of 220, a scratch series of of 507 becomes a handicap series of 720. She may have a shot at money in the singles event and maybe in her doubles pairing with me.

I bowled 194-190-195 which is a 579 scratch series and 705 handicap series. It could have been much better but I missed five one-pin spares (three ten pins). That won't win anything in the singles event but with Olivia's 720, a 1,425 series in doubles might be enough to finish in the money. We'll know in about a week.

As noted earlier, the dry lane conditions caused Sharon to struggle and she didn't put up high scores. The past couple of weeks we've been talking about getting urethane balls for dry lane conditions (such as the Blue Hammer or Storm Polar Ice) but we hadn't gotten around to it. It's a shame we didn't follow through because having one would have really helped Sharon in this tournament.
