Sharon and I bowled the singles and doubles events in the Livermore Valley Tournament (LVT) at Granada Bowl this afternoon. One important thing we learned today is that the lanes are not resurfaced between squads for the singles-doubles events as they are for the team events. Since we were bowling in the third squad of the day, the lanes were bone dry by the time it was our turn. Luckily, we brought balls for light oil so we weren't completely crushed by the conditions.
We started with the singles event on lanes 11-12. We bowled with Désirée and John, two friendly bowlers from Cloverleaf Bowl in Fremont. Like us, Désirée and John found the lane conditions dramatically unlike those at their regular house. It was certainly a struggle for all of us to adapt to the dry lanes. Ultimately, it was Sharon who adapted best. I'll have more on that later.
Each of us started with our go-to ball but we were forced to abandon them quickly upon seeing every delivery shoot radically to the left. My Raptor Talon saw three shots during the shadow bowling then spent the rest of the day on the shelf. I switched to the Sigma Hybrid which I was able to control for about fifteen frames. Early in the second game, I couldn't keep it to the right of the headpin any longer so it was time for another ball change. I went with the Ascent the rest of the way. Sharon juggled her Eagle, Jewel, and Blue Hammer in much the same way.
Our results in the singles event were mediocre at best. Our scores hovered just below our averages for the most part. We had a few strikes and our spare shooting was pretty good but we were leaving two or three splits per game. This killed any opportunity we had to put up high scores.
For the doubles event, the four of us shifted to lanes 13-14 where we found a little more success. The splits continued to bedevil us but we were striking more often. I had two good games but when we reached the final game, things took a turn for the worse. The lanes were so burnt, even my Ascent was creeping up high on the headpin. I suffered four splits that sent my game spiraling downward. This is where Sharon took command. Instead of continuing to battle the dry outer boards, Sharon switched back to her Eagle but moved inward to the remaining bits of oil on the lanes. With this move, she also employed a harder, straighter shot. Her change in tactics was a grand success as she started the final game with six or seven strikes and finished with a score of 256. Had I not fallen apart in that game, we could have finished in the money but we came up a bit short.
In the end, the six games of bowling were an enjoyable challenge. It was certainly frustrating at times but it put our skills to the test in a way that our regular league bowling seldom does. It was fun bowling with Désirée and John who battled hard to overcome the difficult conditions. They caught some bad breaks but handled them without making excuses or throwing tantrums. They were good sports from beginning to end.

Neither of us finished close to the money in singles. In mixed doubles, 1423 was needed to cash and we fell short with 1388. For the "All Events" competition, Sharon's 2074 is just below the 2084 needed to cash. My 1989 is way off the men's mark of 2124.
So far as our team entry goes, we're still in the money:
