3 wins, 1 loss |
Olivia left her equipment with Ray over the weekend for scheduled maintenance but she didn't get to the pro shop to pick it up before Ray closed on Monday. (This was despite having the day off for the Veterans Day holiday.) Olivia said she was going to arrive early Monday for a few warm up frames but that didn't happen. The Coach and I were there and could have picked up Olivia's gear before the shop closed had we known. This forced Olivia to bowl with house shoes and the only ball she didn't have in the shop -- her new Motiv Ascent Pearl.
Fortunately, we were able to overcome the adversity and win the first two games before tying in the third. We won 3.5 of the 4 points to improve our record for the season to 32-8 and extend our lead to 8.5 points. One Pin Standing remains in second place with a record of 23.5-16.5.
Sharon bowled her high series for the season and missed tying the women's high series for the league by three pins.

GREAT JOB BY SHARON MAKING ALL OF HER RIGHT SIDE SPARES LAST NIGHT.
ReplyDeleteKUDOS FOR OLIVIA FOR NOT QUITTING ON US AND STILL BOWLING WITHOUT HER EQUIPMENT.
AND COURSE OUR TEAM MVP THE MURPH BOWLING A 246 LAST NIGHT. GREAT JOB TEAM. THE HARD WORK AND PRACTICE PAID OFF.
NEXT ON THE BLOCKHEADS HIT LIST IS JEFF TEAM'S. I WANT TO DESTROY THEM.
WE CAN'T RELAX THE PHANTOMS WILL BE TOUGH. OLIVIA GET IT TOGETHER. YOU ARE PART OF A TEAM. WE NEED YOU. THERE ARE 4 BLOCKHEADS NOT 3, 2 OR 1. WE NEED ALL 4 BLOCKHEADS TOGETHER IN ORDER FOR US TO SUCCEED
ReplyDeleteThanks, Coach. Sharon was indeed amazing on her right-side spares. We know she's been working extra hard to conquer that part of the game and it showed last night.
ReplyDeleteAnd Olivia made a solid effort under very difficult conditions. Of course, I had to tease her a little bit after she asked if I was going to write about her mishap with the pro shop. I hadn't even thought about it until she mentioned it. Will this be enough to prompt Olivia to finally jump in here....? ;-)
Olivia, The Coach and I are jerking your chain a little because you are important to our team we're counting on you. We were raised in team sports so there are aspects of being part of a team that have been burned deeply into us but may be foreign to you.
For instance, Coach and I were itching for last night's match with One Pin Standing before we left the lanes the previous Monday night. It's what we talked about at the office all week. When we're going for the brass ring, there's no way we show up for a big match unprepared to play. But we've had that drilled into us since we were eight years old and I would guess you haven't.
Another aspect of being part of a team is understanding your teammates have expectations. They expect that you share their competitive spirit and desire to put forth one's best effort. That's why we invest a lot of money in our equipment and in time to practice. Nobody who plays on a competitive team wants teammates who aren't passionate about what they're doing. There are things that can give that impression -- lack of preparation, incessant tardiness, skipping practice, and indifference to the team's success are a few examples.
I admit I felt extremely disappointed and let down when I learned you didn't have any of your gear except one ball. It was as if you didn't really care about us. I was so pumped up for that match, it was on my mind constantly. I inspected my equipment at noon and set the alarm clock on my phone for 4:00 in case I dozed off watching TV. I checked The Bowler's Advantage website to see if Ray had posted any new tips that might be helpful to us. I arrived at the lanes early to make sure I had the thumb holes in each ball taped properly. I bowled a practice game to make sure I would be fully warmed up to start our first game.
After the initial disappointment passed, it occurred to me that you haven't played on teams all your life as Coach and I have. Perhaps you didn't feel the anticipation I'd been feeling for a week. Obviously you didn't want to bowl without your best equipment and I should have been more understanding of your predicament.
I hope all of us learned something from this experience. We were very fortunate we weren't swept and our hold on first place threatened. Let's utilize our resources and communicate better. We have computers and smart phones. It doesn't take much effort to check a website, send a text message, or place a phone call. Any one of these could have prevented the disadvantage we had to overcome Monday night.
We know from experience that bowling against the vacant team can be difficult. It's not easy getting the adrenaline flowing when competing against a score instead of flesh and blood opponents. Let's work extra hard to keep our focus and seize all four points. We will have to bowl 629 as a team to earn a win. I think we should get past The Phantoms before we concern ourselves with Jeff & Co.
ReplyDeleteThe stats from this week's games have been posted. It appears a mistake was made in the handicapping. We didn't tie in the last game -- we lost by one pin.
ReplyDeleteGREAT JOB AS USUAL WITH THE BLOG. MY KNEES ARE FEELING MUCH BETTER AND REFRESH. I WILL BE READY FOR MONTE CARLO THURS AND FOR SOME SAT PRACTICE.
DeleteLETS STAY FOCUS ON THE PHANTOM TEAM AND CONTINUE TO WORK HARD TOWARDS OUR GOAL TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP. THEN WE CAN WORRIED ABOUT 2013
