RENO INVITATIONAL - WEEK #30

Blockheads: 0 - Most Hated: 4
It was another rough night as we were swept by Most Hated. Olivia wasn't able to bowl but Stephanie came out to sub again. By doing so, Stephanie qualified for our league's sweeper which requires a minimum of 20 games bowled.

The only other good news to report is Sharon's ongoing hot streak. Sharon's 570 series raised her average another point to 171. Perhaps we can give Sharon some support next week when we battle the Barbarians on lanes 33-34.

RENO INVITATIONAL - WEEK #29

Blockheads: 0 - Alley Cats: 4
Once again, we faced an opponent having a hot night. Cecil's 720 series for the Alley Cats sent us to our second consecutive 0-4 sweep despite fine performances by Sharon and Olivia. Sharon's 542 series boosted her average to 170.4. (It was 165.2 as we flipped the calendar over to 2014 so that's a pretty good climb.)

Our opponents' propensity for piling up their high games and high series against us the past few weeks has knocked from the fringe of contention to a sub .500 record. We'll be on lanes 31-32 against Most Hated next week. Our first meeting with them early in season was the point at which our season started spiraling downward. Perhaps we can pull everything back together in the rematch. After facing three 700 series the past two weeks, it would be nice to have a solid, competitive series.

RENO INVITATIONAL - WEEK #28

Tyche, Greek Goddess of Fortune
The Coach answered the call of the goddess, Tyche, so he will be in Reno for some March Madness. Stephanie is subbing for The Coach tonight as we take on BOSS (Team 15).

BOSS is six ponts ahead of us in second place. We can narrow that gap considerably with a good night. It looks like we'll be getting a handicap of about 122 pins. Next week we have the Alley Cats on the schedule. They're in third place, four points ahead of us. If we're going to make a move, this is the time to do it.

RENO INVITATIONAL - WEEK #27

Blockheads: 2 - Gutter Gals: 2

We had a chaotic start with Olivia and The Coach arriving late. Olivia was ready before the end of the third frame so she was able to enter in the first game and catch up. The Coach missed the first game. Despite the distractions, we won the first two games, though just barely. We fell apart in the third game and the Gutter Gals jumped on the opportunity. Their margin of victory was enough to earn the point for total pinfall and a split series. The Gutter Gals deserve credit for hitting a string of spares and strikes in the final frames to dash our hopes of earning a second consecutive sweep.

Our record of 23-17 leaves us on the fringe of the title chase. There's enough of the season left for us to make a push to the top but we can't afford many more missed opportunities if we're to pull it off.

RENO INVITATIONAL - WEEK #25

Blockheads: 3 - Thick 'N' Sexy: 1
Olivia was out of action again this week but Stephanie was standing by to fill in. I was back after the passing of my Mom last week. I was back physically but I certainly didn't have anything going on the lanes. Luckily, Sharon and Stephanie had it together and they were able to carry us to a 3-1 record for the night. That got us back above .500 with a second half record of 17-15.

RENO INVITATIONAL - WEEK #24

Blockheads: 1 - Who Give A Sh*t: 3
Olivia and I were unavailable this week. Stephanie was able to sub for Olivia and my average was used in my absence. As I wasn't present I don't much to add to the scores. The team was certainly consistent with a high of 744 and a low of 737. Unfortunately, our opponents shot better than that in the first and third games.

RENO INVITATIONAL - WEEK #23

Blockheads: 1 - Bowl Movements: 3
This could have been a big night for us but a couple of things stopped us short. First, I showed up with nothing. I couldn't make anything work from beginning to end. Second, our opponents got hot after the first game and put up two scores that would have been tough for us to beat on any night. Had I not been deep in a funk, we might have pulled out the second game and earned a split. But it happened the way it happened and we won only the first game.

On the positive side, Olivia shot her highest series ever and raised her average two pins. We're still on the right side of .500 with a record of 13-11.

RENO INVITATIONAL - WEEK #22

Blockheads: 3 - Jeff Van Bowling: 1
Sunday's practice session appears to have paid off as we had our strongest night of the season. Our series score of 2147 topped our previous high by 73 and we took 3 of 4 from Jeff Van Bowling. We had a solid shot at a sweep but we tailed off in the third game. Adam (224) and Matt (232) got hot down the stretch and that combination left us 28 pins short.

Despite losing the third game, we had a good night and we improved our second half record to 12-8. We entered the night in a three-way tie for eighth place so I expect we moved up at least a couple of spots in the standings.

We'll have another tough match next week as we take on Bowl Movements. I estimate we will receive about 32 pins in handicap. Perhaps we should have another practice session next weekend.

PRACTICE ON SUPER BOWL SUNDAY

All we can bowl for $10
We'll be practicing at AMF Pinole Valley Lanes at 11:00 AM on Sunday. This will be the first time in awhile that all of us have gotten together to work on skills. Please put together a list of things you'd like to work on. I'm sure there will be a fair amount of overlapping between us. (Did I hear someone say "10-pin?") Since this is a bowling buffet with all we can bowl for $10, we might as well exploit it for all we can.

At 1:00, which may be right around the time we finish, ESPN will be broadcasting the PBA Super Clash between Jason Belmonte and Sean Rash. They're bowling a head-to-head three game series with a $2,000.00 prize for each game and $10,000.00 for the winner of the series. You can read the details about the match here. I'll stick around to watch it if anyone else feels like it.

RENO INVITATIONAL - WEEK #21

Blockheads: 3 - Newbies: 1
It was a good night for us Blockheads. Sharon had some concerns that The Coach and I might be troubled by a pair of mountainous distractions but her fears were unfounded. We came close to topping our previous high game and high series and we won a very close match by a score of 3-1. The Newbies didn't make it easy for us as each game went down to the wire. The final score in the second game may give the impression it wasn't close but the outcome was very much in doubt as we entered the 10th frame. Fortunately, we fired a salvo of strikes just as the Newbies encountered a string of splits. This allowed us to boost the gap at the end. We had a shot at a sweep and once again, the outcome came down to the final shots. This time it was Jerry of the Newbies who came up with the strikes to put them just beyond our reach.

Our second half record improved to 9-7 and we moved up to 10th place. We'll have a huge challenge next week as we take on Matt Kish and Jeff Van Bowling (Team 20).

RENO INVITATIONAL - WEEK #20

Blockheads: 1 - Rolling Thunder: 3
Rolling Thunder certainly rolled plenty of thunder and we were beaten 3-1. Michael Shankar came out striking and finished with an excellent 705 series as Rolling Thunder won the first two games by 69 and 114. We fought back to claim the final game and narrowly avoid a sweep.

Our second half record of 6-6 puts us in ninth place. We'll have to bowl better than this is we're going to wrestle the title away from this very competitive league. There's plenty of time left and there's no doubt we can improve our scores. We averaged 169.9 in Over The Wall last season. We're at 167 so far in this league. Let's push it up to 170 and grab the brass ring.

PAUL REED'S AMAZING OCTOBER

Paul Reed
You've seen Paul Reed around and you might be inclined to think of him as that nice guy who works at Albany Bowl. If you've bowled against him in tournaments or read the December 2013 issue of Bowling World, you probably think of him as that guy who bowls a lot of 300 games and 800 series. Here's a link to the December 2013 issue of Bowling World in case you missed their report on Paul's stretch of amazing games and series in October. (I see it was written by Weldon Miles. Is that the Weldon Miles who works at our office?)
