PRE-BOWLING FOR WEEK 10

We bowl Saturday at 2:00 PM

As we discussed yesterday, Sharon's league at Stars on Wednesday nights had to suspend play for half of the league this week. They rescheduled the missed games for Monday, March 11th which would be fine except Sharon can't be in two places at once.

The only reasonable solution we could find to this conflict is for us to pre-bowl Monday night's games this Saturday afternoon. This will alow Sharon to make up the games her other league rescheduled for Monday night while also preventing us from bowling without her.

I made the arrangements with Gina at Diablo Valley Bowl last night. We bowl at 2:00 PM on Saturday. DVB has an afternoon cosmic bowling session beginning at 4:00 so we can't afford to be late or goofing around with other activities while we're supposed to be bowling.

NOTE: Coach won't be able to bowl with us Saturday afternoon. He will bowl Monday night on the regular schedule. Sharon, Olivia, and I will pre-bowl on Saturday.

LUCK O' THE IRISH TOURNAMENT

I'm not particularly fond of no-tap but I know Olivia morphs into Cheryl Daniels when she walks into Bel Mateo Bowl (a.k.a. Olivia's Bowl). I will sacrifice my personal preferences for a solid shot at winning a tournament.

WEEK 9 RESULTS

Won 0, Lost 4

We took a pretty severe beating at the hands of That's How We Roll. It was a 0-4 sweep that dropped our record to 22-14. Team 5 split their series with Don't Matter which moved them back into a tie with us for first place. After going 1-7 the past two weeks, we're rather fortunate to still have a piece of first place.

On the postive side, Sharon bowled a 559 series which topped her previous high of 526. That was 76 over her average and it gives her a decent shot at the $100.00 prize for Most Pins Over Average in the Bowler Appreciation Week promotion.

Comeback Kids are on the schedule for next week. We'll have to bowl much better than this or risk being swept again. We know Chris is nearly automatic for 600+ and Jada keeps getting better every week. (Chris told me she's just beginning. Judging by her smooth delivery and sharp hook, I would have guessed she's been bowling for years.) Leslie and Marcus are capable of dropping a big score on us at any time, too.

Remember, league bowlers can practice for $1.00 per game through Friday as part of Diablo Valley Bowl's Bowler Appreciation Week. Let's take advantage of it.

GIGANTIC FIVE TEAM TOURNAMENT

I hope you haven't forgotten that we have a tournament in Livermore next Sunday morning. We're bowling at 9:00 AM at Granada Bowl in the Gigantic Five Team Tournament.

While on the subject of Granada Bowl, the official results for the Livermore Valley Tournament have been posted. Peter and I finished 4th in the men's doubles which was good for $350.00. I finished 14th in men's singles which was worth $150.00. Peter finished 44th in the men's all-events category which was worth $21.00. Tom Crane will be distributing prize money for the LVT on the day of the Gigantic Five so Peter and I will have some money waiting there for us.

UPCOMING TOURNAMENTS

If you peek over in the right column you will see that I've updated the listing of upcoming tournaments. I have also acquired a few tournament fliers that I have added to our TOURNAMENTS page.

One I just learned of is from Bowling This Month (BTM) magazine. It's the BTM & 123 Tournament at the Grand Sierra in Reno and it runs from February 28th through July 7th. The BTM is scratch and the 123 is handicap. This tournament doesn't require advance registration -- just drop in and bowl. It has singles, doubles, and trios. We could do this one if we do the Reno Fun Four bus trip to Reno in May.

Well, that didn't go quite as well as we hoped. We weren't dreadful but we weren't particularly sharp either. We pulled out the first game by five pins but Team 1 took it to us in the second and third games to take three of the four points. The good news is our closest competitors split their series and gained only one game on us. We remain in first place by two games.

SPARE SHOOTING DIAGRAMS

At our recent practices, we've been working a lot on our spare shooting.  Much of that has involved moving the place we stand on the approach to change the angle of the shot. The rationale behind this method may not have been clear so I'll use some diagrams for clarification.

On the lane diagrams above, I drew straight lines from the pins, across the targeting arrows and back to the approach to demonstrate how moving a few boards on the approach will change the angle of the shot.

The lane diagram on the left uses the center arrow (on the 20th board) while the diagram on the right uses the third arrow (on the 15th board). In either case, you can see how moving three or four boards on the approach while using the same targeting arrow will change the direction of the shot.

It should be noted that the colored lines do not show where you would set your feet. They represent the position of your right shoulder as you walk toward the foul line and the path the ball would take on the lane after you release it. This is assuming you point your bellybutton toward the pin, don't drift on the approach, and roll the ball as straight as a laser toward the pin. With enough practice to make it a habit, you will be able to line up and hit these spares without giving it much thought.

You might find this lane diagram useful if you have trouble remembering the number designations for each board. Since all of us bowl right-handed, I will do all of the counting from a right-hander's perspective (starting from the right).

WAYNE LANSER MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT

Olivia & The Coach at Bel Mateo Bowl

The Wayne Lanser Memorial Tournament (celebrating the life of Wayne Lanser and raising funds for the Alzheimer's Association) was held at Bel Mateo Bowl this afternoon. Olivia, The Coach, and I made the trip into "Niner" territory with hopes of bringing some of their money back over to the East Bay. Sharon wasn't able to join us for this one.

In our previous trips to Bel Mateo Bowl, we've spoken with a young woman on the staff who enjoys working there but doesn't like to bowl. We learned today that she is the granddaughter of Wayne Lanser. Her mother, brother, and sister were also present today.

As always, the bowling at Bel Mateo was excellent. We bowled on lanes 11-12 with Ray, Ray Jr., and Kevin.  Olivia and I bowled previously with Ray Jr. and Kevin in the Holiday Cash Doubles Tournament in December. The Coach and I each had a bad game that kept us out of the money but Olivia bowled well and finished in second place. She also won two of the raffle prizes. She won a Brunswick bowling ball and a basket that included barbecue grilling tools, a bottle of sauce, and a Safeway gift card. Ray Jr. came on strong in the second and third games to finish first.

Olivia has now bowled in three tournaments at Bel Mateo Bowl and finished in the money all three times. With her past success and today's two raffle winners, we were kidding her about renaming the place "House of Olivia." When she finished second, even Craig Gabriel got in on it, commenting that it may be time to change the name from Bel Mateo Bowl to Olivia's Bowl.

Besides Olivia's winnings and the fun we had bowling this Sunday, the tournament raised close to $500 for Alzheimer's research. It was a good day in every respect.

WEEK 7 RESULTS

Won 4, Lost 0

We entered the night in a first place tie with Team 5 (Jeff & Co.) as we were matched up with the Newbies (Team 8) for the first time. James (163 average) pre-bowled for the Newbies and his series of 208-143-144 (495) was already on the books. That 208 in the first game looked rather ominous so we knew a high score might be needed to win the first game. The 143 and 144 appeared to give us an edge in the second and third games.

Perhaps that ominous 208 game James had on the board in advance got us fired up because we came out of the gate hot. We won the first game by 44 pins despite James's 208 and Steve's outstanding 264. The score was 784-740. Olivia fired a 198 and The Coach added a 211 to offset the Newbies' high scores. Our score of 784 was just short of the league's high game of 794 we established the previous week.  It was a relief to have a solid win in the game we figured would be the most trouble.

The second and third games were nail-biters that came down to the final shots in the last frame. Thankfully, we had just enough to hold them off by scores of 698-666 and 688-665 to earn a four-point sweep.

Our team series score of 2170 topped the league's previous high of 2165 (held by Team 5) while the sweep gave us sole possession of first place with a three-point lead. (Irene, Phil, and Peter took 3 of 4 from Jeff's crew.)

We now have the league trifecta with first place, high game, and high series in our possession. A lot of the credit goes to The Coach who worked extensively on his spare shooting Sunday morning and came up with several clutch shots when we needed them most. It was a good night for us all around -- it was the first time ever that all four of us bowled over 500 on the same night.

THE BLOOD DIAMOND REVISITED

I have a few more shots of Sharon's new ball, the Blood Diamond by Lane #1. When we practiced on Thursday night, people from the league at the opposite end of the house came down to check it out. It's a very distinctive ball and Sharon enjoyed success using it to shoot at her single pin spares. I expect the Blood Diamond with make its debut in Over The Wall II tomorrow night.

Sharon broke out her new Buzzsaw Blood Diamond at Diablo Valley Bowl last night. The Blood Diamond is a clear polyester ball with a red diamond in it. It's designed primarily for shooting straight at spares.

We had our second match with Ifrancene VanderHopper (Team 3) and this one was just as tight as the last. Both teams muddled through the first game and we came out on top by a small margin. We did better in the second game but it wasn't enough. Our opponents took it up to a higher level and buried us by 81 pins. Yet again, we split the first two games and found ourselves in a spot where we needed not only a win, but a win by a large margin to avoid losing the point for total pinfall.

In the final game, Peter & Co. turned it up again but this time there was no stopping us. We turned it up to 11 with a 794 to claim the rubber game of the match and edge them by a mere eight pins in total pinfall. Irene and Frances bowled their high series for the season, with Frances's 600+ series being tops for the women in our league. Team 3's scores would have been enough to earn a sweep or at least win 3 out of 4 on most nights. However, on this night we bowled our high game and high series of the season. It's a good thing we did because we needed every bit of it to get past them.

We entered the night in second place with a record of 14-10, half a point behind Don't Matter (Team 7). By winning three of four, we bumped our record up to 17-11 which may have been good enough to push our way back into first place. Don't Matter was paired up with Team 6 but I don't know the outcome of their series. We know from our match with Team 6 last week that they can be pretty tough.

WEEK 5 RESULTS

3 wins, 1 loss

I've been battling a cold since the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday so when I haven't been working or bowling, I've been sleeping. Thus, the blog has been neglected since the second week of the season. I'm trying now to get everything caught up. I have the stats for the past three weeks posted today.

This week we had a real battle on our hands with Team 6 (yet unnamed). It was a lot tighter match than the final outcome would indicate. We won the first game by 47 pins but Team 6 got hot in the second game (powered by Chris Owens's 240) and bombed us by 81. Each team had a win but we were town 34 pins.

For the rubber game of the match, a loss would give Team 6 a 3-1 edge while winning the third game by less than 34 pins would leave us with a 2-2 split. Fort the third game, we were the ones who came out hot as we put up our second best score of the season. We won the final game by 51 pins to claim a 3-1 record for the night. We should consider ourselves fortunate because it easily could have gone the other way.

By winning three of four, we held onto to our ever-so-slim lead of half a point over Don't Matter (Team 7).

In the fourth week of league play, we drew the vacant team on the schedule. This required that we bowl no lower than 39 pins below our team average to earn a win. We managed to do this in the the first and third games but a stinker in the second game cost us a point. Our record for the night was 3-1.

These are the times that were open as of last weekend. I suspect the morning and noon squads on Sunday the 27th have closed by now. Anyone who wants to bowl this Sunday may have no choice but to do so at 3:00. In that circumstance, be prepared for VERY dry lanes. The lanes are not resurfaced after each Singles-Doubles squad.

Olivia is the only one of us who hasn't bowled a Singles-Doubles event yet and she will be looking to make up for that in the last two weekends. I have bowled Singles-Doubles with everyone except Olivia and I'm free to bowl in any of the squads listed except Saturday at 1:00.

At this point, we need to know when Olivia wants to bowl. I'm sure Olivia and Sharon are planning to enter in women's doubles. I'd like to bowl in the mixed doubles with Olivia. The Coach and Peter still haven't bowled in a mixed doubles event so far.

SUNDAY ACTION IN THE LVT

Peter Vanderbout and I entered in the 9:00 AM squad at the Livermore Valley Tournament (LVT) this morning and it would turn out to be an excellent day for us. Since it was the first squad, we had fresh oil. This was Peter's first Singles-Doubles event in the LVT so his scores would count in the "All Events" competition.

We started on lanes 15-16 for the singles competition. We shared the lanes with Claire and Todd who bowl at Homestead Lanes in Cupertino. Peter and I had fun bowling with them. We would shift to lanes 13-14 for the doubles. All of us had very good scores but Peter and I got extremely hot in the doubles set. We had a shot at taking over first place but we fell a little short and settled for third. Peter also reached the leader board in the "All Events" competition. Unfortunately for me, my "All Events" score had already been established so my scores counted only for singles and doubles.

I bowled better this day than ever before and I achieved my first 700 series. Including the games I bowled with The Coach on Saturday, my twelve games in the tournament this weekend were 184, 213, 216, 202, 185, 235, 217, 201, 230, 234, 247, 234. I hope I have something left for our league bowling tomorrow night. On the other hand, it's perfectly fine if Peter left everything in Livermore. ;-)

MORE LVT NEWS

Granada Bowl

The Coach and I returned to Granada Bowl Saturday night for the Singles-Doubles competition in the Livermore Valley Tournament (LVT). We bowled with Jeff and Stella of South San Francisco who are league patrons of Classic Bowling Center in Daly City. 

We didn't have fresh oil but only one squad bowled on the lanes before our arrival. They weren't totally burnt up like the lanes Sharon and I bowled on last weekend. If only we had bowled all night the way we did in the last game. I think they threw Coach off a bit by putting us out of order. Doesn't the universe know that I always set the table for The Coach?

Olivia was out with the flu this week so we bowled as a trio. That's How We Roll were in the same boat with Jon absent. We won the first and third games by a small margin. We lost the second game by a large margin and the point for total pinfall along with it. Thus it was a 2-2 split that left us with a record of 5-3.

HAVE YOU SEEN ME?

LVT UPDATE

Sharon and I bowled the singles and doubles events in the Livermore Valley Tournament (LVT) at Granada Bowl this afternoon.  One important thing we learned today is that the lanes are not resurfaced between squads for the singles-doubles events as they are for the team events. Since we were bowling in the third squad of the day, the lanes were bone dry by the time it was our turn. Luckily, we brought balls for light oil so we weren't completely crushed by the conditions.

We started with the singles event on lanes 11-12. We bowled with Désirée and John, two friendly bowlers from Cloverleaf Bowl in Fremont.  Like us, Désirée and John found the lane conditions dramatically unlike those at their regular house. It was certainly a struggle for all of us to adapt to the dry lanes. Ultimately, it was Sharon who adapted best. I'll have more on that later.

LVT SINGLES & DOUBLES EVENTS

It's time we get serious about picking our dates to bowl in the singles and doubles events for the LVT. Some of the squad times have filled up.

Don't forget that one can't enter just one event without also entering the other. It's a six-game event. An entry in the Singles-Doubles event will require that one first bowl three games for the singles event followed by three games in the doubles event.

For instance, if The Coach and I decide to bowl Saturday morning at 9:00, the first three game series we bowl will count for us individually in the singles competition. The second three game series we bowl will count for us as a doubles team.

The scores Coach and I register in this Singles-Doubles event would also count for us in the "All Events" competition we paid the extra $6.00 to enter. This combines one's three-game series from singles, one's three-game series from doubles, plus one's three-game series from the team event for a total nine-game series score covering the entire tournament.

Keep in mind that if you bowl in multiple singles and doubles events, it's the scores in the first one you bowl that count for your "All Events" series. So if Olivia and I bowled Singles-Doubles the weekend after I bowled with The Coach, my scores bowled with Olivia would not count for the All Events series because it's not my first one. Olivia's scores would count because it's her first Singles-Doubles event.

Also keep in mind, it will cost $56.00 for each Single-Doubles event one enters. It's $28.00 for singles and $28.00 for doubles.

The squad time for Saturday is 9:00 AM. The squad times for Sunday are 9:00 AM, 12:00 PM, and 3:00 PM. Here are the dates and times still open:

OVER THE WALL II - WEEK 1 RESULTS

We opened the second half of the season with three additional teams which brings us to a total of eight. It's certainly better than the five we had in first half but I was hoping we'd have at least ten. We have a few folks back who dropped out before and some we have yet to meet. The league meeting forced us into a late start and as a result, everyone looked tired. Let's hope there's more energy surging through the league in week #2.

As for last night's bowling, this was the tightest series we have ever bowled. Our opponents were Team 1 (not yet named). On the whole, both teams had an off night except for Olivia.

We barely won the first game 580-576. Little did we know that would be the largest margin of victory this evening. We pulled out the second game 635-632. After two games, we had outscored our opponents by a mere seven pins yet we won both of them.

Olivia nearly carried us to a sweep with her best ever score of 224 in the third game but we came up one pin short, 678-679. We earned the point for total pinfall by a score of 1893-1887. Though separated by a total of only six pins, we managed to win three of four. Our record of 3-1 puts us in a tie for second place.

A SPARE NIGHT IN DANVILLE

I practiced at Danville Bowl last night. I didn't roll many strikes but it wasn't entirely bad. It gave me plenty of opportunities to work on my spare shots.
