Practice at Delta Bowl

The plan for tonight is a practice session at Delta Bowl in Antioch at 9:00. Their after hours special isn't all that special -- It's all you can bowl for $15.00. If we bowl six games as we did at Diablo Lanes two weeks ago it will amount to $2.50 per game. That's not so bad.

Though it's not a bargain (like Danville Bowl's $1.00 per game special on Tuesdays & Wednesdays), it's good to practice at different bowling centers. Doing so develops one's ability to adapt to different conditions. If you get too used to bowling in one place under a constant set of conditions, you may end up like a fish out of water when you enter a tournament somewhere else. Even if we don't score well tonight, it will be a good experience for us.

  1. The Coach was busy with the NCAA basketball tournament so Olivia were the only Blockheads practicing at Delta Bowl. I'd been there before to watch a friend bowl in a tournament long ago but it was my first time bowling.

I thought the lane conditions were excellent. They also have a good pro shop with several old relic bowling balls on display. The only real problem was a dead fan that kept us from getting some cool air on our hands. Oh, and a few rowdy drunks making a lot noise behind us for a while but what do you expect on St. Patrick's Day?

We mainly practiced on Olivia's spare shooting. She's working on shooting straight at her spares to avoid inconsistent hooking through the oil in the center of the lane. Through trial and error, she found a target she can hit consistently (15th board -- third arrow) and the spots on the approach to set up for each pin.

When Olivia put her new spare shooting plan to the test, she bowled three games over 160. She was on pace to reach 180+ in our final game but we got the boot in the sixth frame becuase it was closing time.

It was a good night as Olivia learned some things that I believe will boost her average another 10-20 pins by the end of the season.

One other note about our experience at Delta Bowl -- Randy Ashford (Strikers All-Stars with Sharon Evans & Jamari Surney) was bowling on the lanes to our right. He said they're bowling Sunday nights at Delta.
